During my first trip to Asia this year I visited one of the oldest Toaist temples in in Taiwan. This structure is over 300 years old, and people come from all over the country, and from surrounding countries, to pray to Matzu for success in different areas of life. It seems that Mazu had lived as a real person who had saved many others from dying in storms at sea and later became thought of as a deity. Mazu is still passionately worshiped in China and Taiwan today by people seeking remedies for their sufferings in life. There are literally temples like this everywhere. ⁣
⁣
Mazu worship didn't resonate with me so well; it seemed a little more like superstition than the Toaism I was familiar with from my studies of Qigong, Tai Chi, and meditation. I kept asking where the Toaist priests resided who taught techniques for reaching enlightenment. I was told that they were up in the mountains and were for monks and recluses only, not for the common people. ⁣
⁣
The experience left me with a sense that there are two kinds of Toaism, one for seekers of enlightenment, which runs parallel to the yogic traditions of India, and the other for local cultures which is full of superstitions. ⁣
⁣
Nevertheless, it was certainly a bad ass looking building!

This is a clip of a Dave Matthews Band cover that we did recently. The song is called Too Much. I’ve always liked his band a lot, the funky feels, and the super tight musicians. And a lot of people tell me I have a similar sounding voice. The music that I’ve been writing recently is a lighter style of rock compared to music from my earlier albums, but no matter what style I write in, I usually incorporate a lot of funky grooves like some of my favorite bands.

We have major show coming up this Saturday afternoon if you happen to be in San Diego! We will be performing a FREE Happy Hour concert at the world famous Winstons in Ocean Beach, Saturday July 13, 2-5pm

Winstons: 1921 Bacon Street, Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA 92107
Note: this is a FREE event, but you must be 21 or over.
In addition to performing the songs you know and love from our albums, we will be playing a number of covers from bands like Dave Mathews Band, Grateful Dead, Santana, the Cure, Queen, and more. I think you'll especially like the short Queen medley we put together after the major success of the film Bohemian Rhapsody.

But that's not all: we have invited the La Jolla Taiko drum group (a dozen or so members playing HUGE drums) to perform a segment of the show with us. Whether you are familiar with traditional Japanese Taiko drumming or not, be aware that it could just be the most energizing experience of your musical life.
And if that were not enough, we have added a Belly Dancer performance as well! All this, along with one of the most awesome stages, sound systems, and light shows in San Diego.

It can be tricky trying to decide which photo will be best for an album cover or insert. The focus of my latest album “A New Heart” was a departure from my previous two alternative rock albums with Stratosphere, with a direction towards writing more positive and uplifting music. ⁣

I could have picked a photo with the dark, mysterious, tough guy look you see on so many rock albums, but I eventually chose this look. I felt that the outdoor setting in nature, the smile, the acoustic guitar, and the sunshine matched the music pretty well. I hope it makes you want to go outside and get some sunshine and smile too. ⁣

Before my father died he started taking yearly trips to Ireland to see a friend who retired and moved over there. The third year of these trips he wanted to take some family members too and asked me to go. I thought, I don’t know, it’s probably just a lot of green shrubs, but I decided to go anyway. 🎸

It turned out to be a culturally eye-opening experience! In the U.S., when people go out to bars there’s usually a certain age range in each place, and if you don’t know someone it’s often not cool to talk to them. In Ireland, after the work day is done, people hit the pubs, bring their kids, the grandparents show up, they have food, drink some beers, everyone socializes and laughs, shoot darts, dance. Earth Harp played outside the Namm Show. 🔈
Seeing this instrument played live was awesome! William Close, the inventor of the instrument, tied the giant strings of the Earth Harp to the top of the Anaheim convention center and performed a concert with it for tens of thousands of people at the event.

The Earth Harp is a unique musical installation that can turn any architectural or natural space into an instrument, because it utilizes the natural acoustics of the space to amplify the strings. Mr. Close said that the first time he played the instrument he stretched the strings all the way across an outdoor canyon and allowed the echo chamber created by the canyon to amplify the strings.

The Earth Harp was recently named by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's longest playable stringed musical instrument. Very Cool! #earthharp

Went to the NAMM show this year in Anaheim, CA, and have a few pictures to share. In case you don’t know about this convention, I didn’t for years, it was founded in 1901 (amazingly) and it’s the world’s largest event for music merchants.

The event was swamped with tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people and it filled every room in the convention center right across the street from Disney Land. It seemed to me like a combination of being at the largest Guitar Center in the universe, and being a cool festival with live music around every corner. I’ll post some more live video clips this week.
